CWE and Selection Process for Nationalised Banks

Selection Process

General

Mere valid/ prescribed score of Common Written Examination does not provide a sure chance to a candidate for getting called for Interview. Depending upon the number of vacancies, only those candidates who rank sufficiently high in the order of merit in CWE as per the cut-off marks decided by the Bank and other criteria like percentage of marks in academic qualification exam etc. are called for the Interview. Generally, the no. of candidates called for interview are 3-4 times the no. of vacancies for general candidates and 5-6 times for the others.

PO/MT

For PO/MT, generally there is group discussion and personnel interview. However there are cases when some banks make selections only on the basis of personnel interview.

The interview is conducted to assess the candidate’s attitude, personality, level of communication, clarity and problem solving innovativeness, level of effectiveness in computer operations, willingness to work anywhere in the country etc. and to assess their overall suitability for the post.

The total and minimum (passing) marks allotted for group discussion and interview are decided by individual banks.

Similarly, each bank decides its own weightages for marks of group discussion, interview, CWE score and other parameters if any, for final selection. However all these details are spelt out in the advertisement for vacancies.

For example, One bank which recently advertised vacancies for PO/MT had allotted total marks 100 marks for Group Discussion and 100 marks for Interview. The candidates were required to to secure minimum marks as decided by the Bank at each level of selection process and only those candidates were to be considered for preparation of final rank lists.

The final rank lists was to be prepared on the basis of TWS scores obtained by the candidates in the stipulated CWE for PO/MT + Group Discussion + Interview, with the following weightage:

  • CWE - 50%
  • Group Discussion - 20%
  • Interview - 30%
  • Total - 100%
The final selection for the post was to be made on the basis of rank lists drawn based on the Total Marks calculated as above (out of 100 marks).

In an another bank which recently advertised vacancies for PO/MT, the selection was only on the basis of marks in interview and CWE score. The bank had allotted 50 marks for interview and the final selection was to be made from the candidates who had secured minimum 22.50 marks (20.00 marks for SC/ST/OBC/PC) and by merit ranking on the basis of aggregate marks obtained by the candidates in the CWE (out of 250) & Interview (out of 50).

Clerical Cadre

For Clerical Cadre, there is only personnel interview. The interview is conducted to assess the candidate’s attitude, personality, level of communication, clarity and problem solving innovativeness, knowledge /proficiency in local/State language (ability to read, write and speak local/State language) level of effectiveness in computer operations, willingness to work anywhere in the State etc. and to assess their overall suitability for the post.

The final selection is made only from the candidates who have secured minimum stipulated marks / percentage (generally 40-50%)n the interview and by merit ranking on the basis of aggregate marks obtained by the candidates in the CWE & Interview. The actual weightage given for CWE marks and personnel interview is not specifically stipulated . However it However it can be expected that a candidate to be considered for selection should get minimum 40% marks in interview (35% in respect of Reserved category.)
