Establishment

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) is an autonomous body registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

 

IBPS started in 1975, as a unit of National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM). The objective was to develop an unbiased and efficient system for recruitment, promotion and placement services. In 1984 this unit became an independent entity at the behest of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Public Sector Banks.

Services and Clients

The IBPS has acquired a unique distinction of being a premier national level Institute for employment testing, admission testing, training and research related to selection and management of human resources. It has been rendering assistance to financial sector in the activities of employees’ selection, promotion and placement. For this purpose, the Institute has been designing appropriate measurement tools which are fair and objective.

 

IBPS is a pioneer in the use of Objective Type testing methodology for employment testing in the country. It provides clients end to end solutions maintaining accuracy, secrecy and confidentiality.

IBPS handles recruitment for the most of the banks in India. It also conducts entrance tests forming management institutes. The list of clients of IBPS can broadly be classified into:

Infrastructure & Resources

The Institute has its own premise at Kandivali, Mumbai which houses all its departments under one roof. The Institute is well equipped with its own in-house resources. All testing activities related to designing, composing, printing, assembly, etc. are carried out in-house. The Institute is equipped with robust security and vigilance systems to limit any possibility of breach in the confidentiality of information.

 

With more than 25 years of experience and expertise in handling the recruitment and selection activities, the Institute has developed its strength to conduct examinations on mass level. In the year 2014-2015, IBPS tested over 1.5 crore candidates.

Common Written Examinations (CWE)

IBPS has recently started conducting separate Common Written Examinations [CWE] for i) Recruitment of Probationary Officers(PO)/ Management Trainees (MT) and for ii) Recruitment In Clerical Cadre in 20 Public Sector Banks (erstwhile Nationalised Banks). Together these banks have about 55% of the total Banking Business in India and about 50% of the staff. The CWE PO/MT Exam scores are also often used by some other Banks and Financial Institutions like IDBI Bank, ECGC etc. for selection for entry level Officers’ posts.
